What is LookTel?

LookTel Money Reader LookTel is developing a suite of revolutionary assistive smartphone applications that bring the most powerful recognition technology of today to the aid of persons with low vision or blindness. This real-time recognition technology enables users to scan and instantly recognize objects such as packaged goods, soda cans, money, CDs, and landmarks like signs and store fronts.

LookTel has two apps available today, LookTel Money Reader and LookTel Recognizer, which are designed for the accessible iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and Mac computers; additional apps are currently under development.

By working closely with the visually impaired community, listening to and understanding their specific needs, LookTel develops revolutionary solutions that increase independence and make a meaningful impact in their everyday lives.

LookTel is powered by NantWorks™ Internet of Thought™ data linking services. Access NantWork's Internet of Thought™ data linking services through a number of NantWork's offerings, including LookTel™ and iD™ audio and visual recognition applications.

LookTel was developed under sponsorship from the National Institute of Health (NIH), National Eye Institute (NEI), and is the recipient of the following Grants: 1R43EY016953-01 & 2R44EY016953-0. Many individual end users and researchers at the Atlanta Research Education Foundation (AREF) of the Veteran's Administration and Blindwisdom Inc. have collaborated with us to evaluate LookTel in end user trials.


Awards

In early versions, LookTel was awarded third place in the CTIA E-Tech Awards 2008 (Consumer Mobile Application - Healthcare/Public Safety). LookTel was also a runner up in the AT&T devCentral Fast-Pitch Platinum Awards 2009. A final version of LookTel was awarded first place at CTIA E-Tech Awards 2010 in the Mobile Applications - Healthcare category. LookTel also integrates with IPPLEX's mobile healthcare solution which was awarded first place in the CTIA E-Tech Awards 2009.

LookTel Money Reader for iPhone launched in March to overwhelming praise from critics and users alike, earning a 5-star review average and a featured spot in the Apple App Store's "What's Hot" Category. LookTel has also been featured by the New York Times, The Huffington Post, Tech Crunch, Engadget, and several other major publications. Additionally, LookTel has been selected as the winner of the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) Chairma's Awards for Advancements in Accessibility. The award, which recognizes outstanding efforts to advance communications accessibility for people with disabilities, was awarded in Washington D.C. on October 28th 2011.
